Frequently asked questions
Everything parents ask before they install FreePhoneTracker — the practical, the technical, and the honest questions about privacy and the law. Can’t find your answer? Get in touch.
Getting started
What is FreePhoneTracker?
It’s a free parental tracking and monitoring app for Android. The app runs on your child’s phone; you watch everything from a web panel in your browser — location, calls, messages, apps, screen time, and more.
How do I set it up?
Create a free account, add your child, install the app on their Android phone, and link the two with a pairing code. It takes about two minutes — the download page shows every step with screenshots.
What devices does it support?
The app installs on Android phones. Your panel works in any modern browser, so you can watch from a phone, tablet or laptop without installing anything on your own device.
Do I need my child’s phone to set it up?
Yes, for a few minutes — to install the app, enter the pairing code, and grant permissions together. After that, everything happens in your panel.
Pricing
Is it really free?
Yes. The app, your account and the core tracking are free with no card required. Advanced features and extra access days are unlocked by completing simple tasks, or with an optional Premium unlock. See pricing.
What’s free versus what needs unlocking?
Free forever: location, places, call and message logs, screen time, app limits, website blocker, content filter and alerts. Unlocked by task or Premium: call recording, social monitoring, typed-text alerts and longer history.
Features
Can I track location in real time?
Yes. The phone reports its GPS location continuously, and you can request a live window for near-real-time tracking. You can also set places that alert you on arrival and departure. More on the location page.
Can I read texts and see calls?
Yes. See the full call log and read SMS threads from your panel. Chat apps like Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp are covered by social monitoring.
Can it tell me when a dangerous word is typed?
Yes. Keyword alerts watch messages, searches and — if you switch it on — typed text for the words on your list, and notify you the moment one appears. See the keyword alerts page.
Can it use the camera or microphone?
No. FreePhoneTracker does not take photos or record audio from the phone. Call recording is the only audio feature, it is off by default, and it is only lawful with consent where you live.
Privacy & legality
Will my child know it’s installed?
Yes. The app shows a transparency screen listing exactly what’s collected and doesn’t hide that it’s running. FreePhoneTracker is designed for open, parent-and-child monitoring.
Is it legal to use?
Monitoring your own minor child’s phone is legal in most places, and FreePhoneTracker is built for exactly that. Monitoring another adult without their consent is not something the app is designed for or that we support. Some features, like call recording, have specific local rules — check the laws where you live. See our privacy policy.
Do you sell my family’s data?
Never. Your data exists to help you keep your child safe. It’s visible only in your panel, isn’t sold or shared, and is deleted when you remove it or turn a feature off.
Can I turn features off or delete data?
Yes. You control what’s on, per child and per device, and you can turn any feature off or erase collected data at any time from your panel.
Technical
Will Android updates break it?
No. Because the app holds its permissions openly rather than through hidden tricks, it cooperates with Android and keeps working through updates.
Does it drain the battery?
Not noticeably. Location reporting adapts to movement, and the app is built to be light, so a day of tracking doesn’t cost a day of battery.
Why are there two download options?
They are the same app. The direct download is for phones without Google Play or when you want the newest version before the store catches up.
